It is also why I prefer All Quite over the Western Front (that scene where Paul gets his first kill is stunning, it’s even better in the novel) and over Saving Private Ryan. It is why I prefer Platoon to Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter.

Films like Schindler’s List and The Pianist are great films because they take the time to realise there were heroic individuals that were German who risked their lives to shelter Jewish people – it is important to realise that the enemy are human begins to. Maybe this is easy for me to realise this as my home country hasn’t been torn by war, unlike my mate from Kosovo who holds a slight grudge against Serbians.Myerlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00772428029534463716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1282345477542778584.post-14121593310979513422012-08-11T21:26:04.577+01:002012-08-11T21:26:04.577+01:00This is an excellent review -- beautifully written...This is an excellent review -- beautifully written, detailed, and balanced. Despite its flaws, this sounds like a movie I would appreciate, although it would be very difficult to watch. Maybe I will watch The City of Life and Death first

Odd -- I don't see how this could be described as "anti-Japanese;" the atrocities Japan committed against China are well known. Is every Holocaust film "anti German?" I always have trouble understanding reactions like that. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1282345477542778584.post-42596063171417779842012-08-11T17:45:17.809+01:002012-08-11T17:45:17.809+01:00Good review, Myerla.
