If I was to pick a film from John Hughes' collection of teen
comedies it would be The Breakfast Club.
To be honest, Hughes' films could easily fill every spot in anybody's list but The Breakfast Club is arguably his
most famous film. The Breakfast Club
is almost perfect, if you haven't seen it don't read any further, but the final
scene just doesn't ring true, I mean where does the Andrew Clark and Allison
Reynolds relationship spring from? She gets a make over, loses all individuality and suddenly becomes attractive to others. Maybe that was the point, you have to conform to accepted social standers to be noticed in that way... Anyway, apart from that it's a damn fine
film.
I love 10 Things I
Hate About You, it's on TV pretty much weekly and whenever I happen to
stumble upon it I will always watch it.
Back to the Future
is a Teen Comedy with a Science Fiction, Action Adventure twist and much like 10 Things I Hate About You I will always
watch it whenever I happen to catch on TV (and it's on TV a lot). Endlessly
quotable and immensely rewatchable time and time again, Back to the Future is a classic. Hopefully this one is within the rules.
The Breakfast Club is comedy...but I think it has more drama and angst than comedy.

Yeah, despite there being thousands of Teen Comedy films, I just don't watch the genre so I found this one quite tough because my choices were limited.

DeleteI adore 10 Things... Heath Ledger was so great in it. Julia Stiles, too. And a really great, clever adaptation of Taming of the Shrew.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast Club is such a classic. It still speaks to teens, and the teenager inside all adults. Absolutely timeless, even though it's SO 80s.
Heath Ledger is great in almost anything, shame he died, he had so much to give. Yeah, a great modernised Shakespeare adaptation.

Love your choices!! Haven't seen any of them on the other lists, which is great for variety. My favorite of your three is Back to the Future, which I think fits perfectly. I saw it in the theatre the first time and it was so engaging, a perfect movie to see with a crowd. The whole joint broke into a cheer when George punched out Biff over Lorraine.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast Club is so quintessentially John Hughes, it's dated around the edges but still relatable. I have to agree about the ending.
I don't like Julia Stiles but she doesn't ruin 10 Things for me since the rest of it is so appealing.
I would have loved to have been Back to the Future in the cinema.

DeleteI agree with every word you said about BREAKFAST CLUB. I also love BACK TO THE FUTURE, although I've never thought of it as a teen comedy. I don't remember how I felt about 10 THINGS, so I have to re-watch it.

10 Things I Hate About You is such a memorable title for me. It's also my wife's favorite movie, like, ever. Such a perfect pick!

DeleteMaybe I'm misinterpreting what you're saying, but the way I read your post, you've got the wrong characters paired up for Breakfast Club. John Bender(troublemaker) was with Claire(princess) and Allison Reynolds(basket case) ended up with with Andrew(the jock). Made sense to me, if you consider the story. We all expected the match would've been Claire and Andrew, head cheerleader and lead football player. But neither of them were happy living up to their parents' expectations, and knew that if they showed any affection for someone opposite of what was expected that it would drive their parents crazy, and at the end it did.

Oh, so I did. I was fully convinced that Judd Nelson was Emilio Estevez and Emilio Estevez was Judd Nelson I got the actors muddled up from the very start, I had wired this into by brain since I've seen clips of the film.
