Liebster award

The Liebster is an award that's passed from blogger to blogger as a recognition of quality work. I received mine from two people, Alex from and so it begins and R. Hamilton. To accept the award there are rules which must be followed however:

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves
2. Answer the 11 questions the person giving the award has set for you.
3. Create 11 questions for the people you will be giving the award to.
4. Choose 11 people to award and send them a link to your post.
5. Go to their page and tell them.
6. NO TAG BACKS.

11 things about me
1.      I study History at Plymouth University, on my first day in Plymouth somebody asked me where the porn shop was. To be perfectly honest I am still unaware if he said ‘pawn’ or ‘porn’. Either why I am not a frequent customer to either so I could not be of any help.
2.      I’ve been sneezed on by a deer. I felt the bits of phlegm hit me right in the face. It took me rather by surprise, so I coughed at the deer; it bit me in retaliation, now I turn into a deer during full moon.
3.      I swing toward communism, yet realize it doesn’t work as an entire society of people can’t be equal, it is impossible (but they should be treated equally, obviously, except for anyone who likes Big Brother).
4.      Leonard Cohen is my favorite musician (I am going to one of his concerts in September, at 20; I’ll be the youngest person there). I’m Your Man is so damn sexy – ‘if you want a doctor I’ll examine every inch of you’
5.      I play Texas Hold em’ Poker (I have played seriously for two years), and went to the student nationals in April of this year, but I failed to get past the first day (I was knocked out with pocket 7s two nights in a row). However I survived eight hours which was not too bad. Oddly enough, I saw someone I knew. I kept looking at her (in a non-freaky way I must add) trying to work out who she was – turns out she went to my old school. Small world, eh?
6.      I find it difficult to watch Casino Royale’s poker scenes, because Bond is clearly a donk (Google it if you are unsure of its meaning) and sucked out on that straight flush. If Phil Hellmuth had played poker with Bond, Hellmuth would explode with anger.
7.      One of my dreams is compete the WSOP in Las Vegas and bluff Doyle Brunson (sadly, getting the $10000 to buy in is the easy part).
8.      I have asthma, so when I was younger my parents installed a device which beeps when I happen to stop breathing. It started beeping once, but it turned out that the device had fallen off – my parents were really disappointed….with the quality of the device.
9.      I have dyslexia (which explains the poor writing quality). Some people assumed I would not get much further past GCSEs. Suckers.
10.   I have an odd scene of humour of which only 1 in 1,000,000,000 find funny.
11.  I often have very crazy and very surreal fantasies.

Bonus fact: Lots of Brandy + being single = vomiting and proclaiming my, and I quote, ‘undying love’ for a certain somebody.

Oh, and I also gave £10 to an Australian guy named Harry.

And so it begins

What is your favorite film of all time? Just one. Go.
Just one? *sigh* The issue is it changes, sometimes I think about one film more than another, for example I can’t get Paris, Texas out of my head, but I’ve only seen that once so I’m going to say Pan’s Labyrinth.
What is your favorite song of all time? Just one. Go.
Leonard Cohen is my favourite singer/songwriter and as all his songs go into more depth in three minutes than Titanic did in three hours so it is a hard choice, but I’ll say his most covered song Suzanne or Hallelujah or The Future oh fuck this, its Leonard Cohen, how could I impossibly choose?

Who is your favorite film director of all time?
Alfred Hitchcock.
What is the best television show you have ever seen?
Fawlty Towers – don’t mention the war.

Which place would you feel more at ease: the woods of Deliverance, or Maynard’s basement in Pulp Fiction?
I haven’t seen Deliverance, so I’ll go for that one. Also the woods are bigger than Maynard’s basement – more places to run = more places to hide.

What is the best portrayal of addiction you’ve ever seen on film?
Requiem for a Dream
Do you respond to comments left on your blog? If not, why?
On occasions I do, often I normally return a favour by commenting on their blog

Were you born a movie fan, or was there an event (or specific film) that turned you on
to films? It just happened over the summer of 2010.

What’s the best looking film you’ve ever seen? Specifically is it relates to cinematography. From 2012 I would pick A Royal Affair and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Do you own any Criterion DVDs or Blu-Rays? If so, how many?

None, is this a North American thing? I believe it is, mind you. I’m a good old fashioned DVD man.

What is your favorite Criterion movie cover?
See above

Hamilton

1. What is your guilty pleasure (movie or otherwise)?
The Wickerman (2006), its crap, but I loved it because of that. Nicholas Cage is hysterically funny in the lead role.

2. Do you see your blog as anything more than a hobby?
It is a profession I wish to go in, so it’s some experience

3. What is your favourite ever kids' film and why?

The Wizard of Oz, used to watch it every time I visited my grandma.

4. If you had to delete one film genre from the course of history, what would it be?
Romantic comedy. Hogwash, same thing over and over again.

5. Do you have a movie that everyone loves but you just don't get? (And I mean good movies, not Twilight or something like that).
Breathless, see it as nothing more than self indulgent rubbish.

6. If you had the opportunity to interview any film-related person ever, who would it be?
Leonard Cohen has had film about him, but mere simpleton like me would not even know where to start.

7. What's your day job?

I’m a student, but as summer job I work at Peavey electronics.

8. Is there anywhere that you have never visited, but always wanted to?

East Asia seems great place to go.

9. What movie never gets old for you?

12 Angry Men, because its themes still resonate today

10. What is the weirdest thing you have seen or the weirdest thing you have ever done?

I can’t remember, I normally do odd things while I’m drunk like pick up a hedgehog with by bare hands or rugby tackle a bollard.

11. Would you rather have to erase your top ten favourite movies of all time from complete existence (so that no one knows they ever existed except you) or never be able to watch a movie again yourself?

Erase them, I can always find a new top 10.

What is your name?
What is your quest?
What is your favourite colour?
What is the capital of Assyria?
Have you ever had a whole cinema to yourself?
What is your greatest cinematic experience (does not necessarily mean greatest film)?
What director(s) have you yet to check out?
What do you think of Sight and Sound’s new poll awarding Vertigo number one spot over that Orson Wells film?
Who is your favourite author?
What is your favourite movie soundtrack?
Have you seen Paris, Texas? If no, watch it. Now!

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. You write beautifully; I never would have guessed you have dyslexia. And I love your sense of humor. I cracked up when I read about the porn/pawn shop and being sneezed on by a deer.

The Wizard of Oz is absolutely, hands down, my favorite kids' movie too. I have such fond memories of watching it when I was a kid. I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth yet.

Oh, and Fawlty Towers is terrific. Will you stop talking about the war? Me! You started it! We did not start it! Yes you did — you invaded Poland.

    1. Thanks for your kind words, I’ve practised writing, it used to be terrible, but practise makes perfect. Personally I don’t feel schools do enough when it comes to grammar. For example when to correctly use a comma, apostrophe and so on.

Such a great episode that one. I may go to Germany as part of university trip, I’ll have to be careful and not mention, I may mention once and I think I may get away with it, but I’m not sure.

Despite it being a favourite I haven’t seen The Wizard of Oz in years.

  2. If your humour is so odd, why did I read the whole thing through?

  3. Thanks for thinking of me. I received the latest Liebster Award a couple weeks ago. Here is my post on it: http://tipsfromchip.blogspot.com/2012/07/i-received-liebster-awardagain.html

I'll leave some answers to your questions here.

My favorite color is blue. About a month after it opened I was given a free pass to see Superman Returns. I was the only one in the theater. I think Vertigo is overrated, but I felt that way long before this latest poll. Good? yes. One of the best of all time? No. I don't read anywhere near as much as I used to, but when I was at my peak I couldn't get enough of Robert Heinlein. I used to buy movie soundtracks because they were a good way to get a variety of music on a single CD, but I never really had one that I listened to a lot more than the others.

Oh, and if I remember my history, Assyria is an ancient region so there is no capitol anymore (unless there was some major news this morning that I didn't catch.)
