Thursday Movie Picks: Father-daughter relationships

http://wanderingthroughtheshelves.blogspot.co.uk/
Another Thursday Movie Picks, another all in the family edition. This time it's Father-Daughter relationships.

Interstellar is a flawed film, it's far too expository and Anne Hathaway's monologue about love transcending time or dimensions or whatever is complete gibberish but there's no denying that Nolan's Interstellar is truly cinematic. However, for all the great visuals and spectacular sights the film's beating heart is the father (Matthew Mcconaughey) and daughter (Mackenzie Foy) relationship. You have to have a black heart not to well up when Cooper (Mcconaughey) watches his daughter grow up millions of miles away.

I decided to go down the route how death affects a father-daughter relationship and for this I picked Mystic River. Kate (Emmy Rossum) is one of few things that survived from Jimmy's (Sean Penn) first marriage. So as an the eldest daughter she is an obvious favourite and Jimmy is over protective of her, he hates her boyfriend and allows bad blood to judge the kid (Kate and her boyfriend have to see each other in secret). When she is brutally murdered, Jimmy is left distraught. Mystic River is a great film, one of Eastwood's best. The film uses Kate's passing as a way to show Kate's importance to Jimmy and uses it show how strong their relationship was.

I suppose this counts....An East Asian classic. I won't say any more at risk of ruining it for those who haven't seen it...not for lovers of octopi. The movie is Oldboy, by the way.

  1. I haven't seen Interstellar or your other pick but Mystic River is a very inventive choice since it looks at the dynamic in an unusual way. I liked, but didn't love, the film but it's packed with an amazing cast.

    1. I could not recommend both films more, Interstellar for the visuals and father-daughter relationship, and Oldboy for an unforgettable experience .

Yeah. I tried to go down a different route, the daughter doesn't have to be alive, the film can examine their relationship with her not being a part of it and seeing how much this hurts Jimmy.

  2. I'm a huge fan of Oldboy, but yeah, that's a twisted pick. I'm proud, lol.

    1. Haha. Thanks. I cackled manically when I though of it. Then I became concerned with my behaviour.

  3. I love INTERSTELLAR (mainly for the father-daughter relationship) and OLDBOY*, and I like MYSTIC RIVER.

*I didn't like the remake. Have you seen it?

    1. I have, yes. It sort of just exists, really. It's not terrible, but it's not good either. However, I do feel that Spike Lee's directors cut may be a better film than the one that was released to cinemas.

  4. I got Interstellar as well and I loved Oldboy! I actually wanted to pick Oldboy too, but I think it was out of my specific theme, so I dropped it.
    Great!

    1. Haha, yes. Oldboy would not fit into your sentimental theme.

  5. I've only seen Interstellar from your picks, the father-daughter moments there were great. I have yet to see the other two, but Oldboy has been on my watch list for some time.

    1. I highly recommend Oldboy...unless you have a love of octopi.

  8. LOL Another Oldboy. This is awesome.

Great picks! Even if Interstellar is flawed, it fits so perfectly here.

    1. I was kinda hoping I'd be the only one, the fact it was picked twice make me worry for the human race!

  10. Oldboy was something else, ahha.

Mystic River is a really great choice! I haven't seen it in a really long time so I don't remember everything about it. I'll have to give it another go.

    1. Haha. It was a mentally questionable choice that's for sure.

    1. I was quite worried that Interstellar would feature a lot, but it was picked as often as I thought it would be

  12. Mystic River didn't cross my mind at all. It's been a long time since I've seen it.

  13. Somehow I knew someone would pick Interstellar and I'd agree the father/daughter relationship is one of the strengths of the film.

  14. Awesome picks! Perhaps the strongest aspect of Interstellar is the father/daughter relationship, even though Coop's son is sorta thrown to the side and forgotten. Great to see Mystic River selected too. Jimmy discovering the crime scene is so chilling and sad.
