Thursday Movie Picks: Immortal chacters

A new week and a new Thursday Movie Picks, this time it's immortal characters. To make life a tad easier I'm picking characters who have unnatural long life rather than simply being unkillable. Make sure to check out http://wanderingthroughtheshelves.blogspot.co.uk/

Jason and the Argonauts holds a special place in many people's hearts as a generation of kids grew up on the classic works of Ray Harryhausen. He has many famous works from Clash of the Titans to The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and of course Jason and the Argonauts which features immortal gods. For those who grew up with such films, it's a nostalgic trip to their childhood. For the younger crowd it's more of film to admire the ingenuity of people like Harryhausen who had to work with tools completely different to today's modern computers.

There are plenty of immortal creatures in the horror genre, some are monsters (Dracula) but some are supposedly human, such as Jason, Michael Myers, and Freddie Kruger. My pick was human but is now the leader of the Cenobites and he resides in a extradimensional realm ready to punish those who solve his little puzzle box.

There are no immortal beings in As Above So Below (not that I remember) but it's about a group of explorers who venture into the catacombs of Paris to find the Philosopher’s Stone which will grant the bearer immortality. It's a good flick, highly reminiscent of The Descent, which is one of best horror films of this century.

  1. Hellraiser is an awesome pick! I watched As Above, So Below a few months ago and I don't remember it that well. It didn't stay with me.

  2. You went for the immortal Gods too. I am yet to be able to finish Jason but the animation is legendary I need to. I'm not keen on horror films but I have heard of both - enough to steer clear of them :)

  6. Oh great pick! I love Jason and the Argonauts and all Ray Harryhausen films...what a perfect choice for this week. I have never seen Hellraiser or As Above So Below. I don't like horror movies too much and the last one sounds like it would be?.

    1. Last one is certainly a horror, it's very intense and claustrophobic.

  7. Man! I haven't seen any of these. I remember the Hellraiser cover always freaking me out as a kid. Never much of a horror fan. I've done all the others though...Jason, Freddy, Myers.
