Thursday Movie Picks

Welcome to Thursday Movie picks, hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves, this weeks’ theme is all about movies that go well together.

In the Heat of the Night and Mississippi Burning
Both of these films have a somewhat similar plot, a murder investigation in a small town in the deep. Both In the Heat of the Night and Mississippi Burning can be used to examine attitudes towards racism in the 1960s and the 1980s.
The Conversation, Enemy of the State and Snowden
With privacy being the thorny issue it is these set of films make for interesting viewing to compare and contrast the levels in which our privacy is being invaded as technology improves.
Raw and Ginger Snaps
Both of these films have similar themes, namely sexual awakening among teenage girls. Both of these films use horror films to examine coming of age and the fears of what is happening inside your body.

  1. I still haven't seen Raw. Netflix said it was coming in June but now they completely removed it. I liked Snowden so I'll have to check out the other films you said would go with it.

  2. I've only seen Snowden and I liked it so I'll have to check out those other two.

  3. This is not a bad way to watch movies – not every time, but when you’re up for a late night ad hoc double feature. I do this every now and then just to dust off some old DVDs and thereby justify keeping them on the shelf: e.g. pairing “Grabbers” (2012) with “It Came from Beneath the Sea” (1955)/ “The Hunger Games” (2012) with “The Most Dangerous Game” (1932)/ “Sightseers” (2012) with “Psychos in Love” (1987)/ “St. Trinian’s” (2007) with “Finishing School” (1934)/ “Lucy” (2014) with “Charly” (1968)/ and so on. It helps put each film in a new perspective.

I’ll keep your pairing suggestions in mind,

  5. I've seen In The Heat of the Night which is excellent but still have to see Mississippi Burning but a good pairing! I haven't seen the middle 2 but have seen The Conversation which is disturbing but great and love the pairing with Enemy of the State. I haven't seen the 3rd pairing but it makes me think of another film which would work well, Lives of Others, I think it is called. About the Staazi police listening in to the lives of a couple in East Berlin.

  6. Enemy of the State and Snowden makes great sense. I actually haven't seen the latter yet, but I have watched the doc Citizen Four. In the Heat of the Night is a great movie. This pairing reminds me I still need to see Mississippi Burning.
