Thursday Movie Picks #50: All in the Family Edition: Sibling Relationships (Biologically Related)

When I walked out of the screening for Jurassic World I said to my younger brother (who'd accompanied me) that if we were at Jurassic World and the dinosaurs escaped it would be every man for himself. He agreed and then told me a story about how he was watching this review for a gun and the reviewer said the gun saved him from a bear with just a single shot. What happened was he was walking through the woods with his girlfriend when a bear suddenly appeared. What he did was shoot his girlfriend in the leg and run away as fast as he could thus saving him from the bear with just a single shot. Has there ever been a more poisonous relationship between siblings? I doubt it. Bette Davis is superb, this is the best performance from her I have ever seen. It's also the worst performance from her I have ever seen. In fact it's the only performance from her I have ever seen.

Michael Myers isn't fond of his sisters, he murdered one and spends a few movies trying to murder the other one. Not a loving relationship.

I reviewed this recently, it's a independent British film so it might be hard to watch legally outside of the UK (please do watch independent films legally). When Tim's mother dies, Tim becomes his sister's guardian, they argue but it's apparent that their relationship is a loving one. Tim also has a distant relationship with his brother but his brother helps him out of criminal hole that Tim has dug himself.

  1. I haven't seen Bypass but it sounds interesting. Halloween is certainly the sib relationship taken to the worst extreme but such a trendsetting movie.

Baby Jane is one of my extra picks of the week! Another precedent setting movie, starting the unfortunately named hagsploitation craze of the 60's where former queens of the cinema went the horror route. Bette (and to a lesser degree Joan Crawford) is amazing in this. A real study in the damage envy can do to a relationship.

Only Bette Davis movie that you've seen?! Well you have many good, and some bad, movies ahead if you delve into her filmography. I'd suggest All About Eve, Now, Voyager, The Letter and Dark Victory as good places to start if you're interested in seeing more of her work.

  2. ...I haven't watched any of these films! Your list has a very good variety by the way. Horror, classic, and contemporary indie, great list!

    1. Not intentional...just picked them at random. Thanks for the comment.

  3. Bypass sound really interesting. It sounds like Sweet Sixteen a bit, another British film. I hope I can see that film someday. I love your other two picks. I don't think I would've thought of Halloween. That's great.

  4. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is a great pick! My Mom loves that movie. It's one of those she just had to show me growing up. So incredibly acted. Halloween is one I never would've thought of but such a perfect pick.

    1. I do tend to pick twisted choices...I am a normal (relatively) person. Honest!

    2. I try not to start franchises with too many installments, unless I have to. I read that they're making an 11th film, so I'll probably catch up right before it comes out.

  8. Love your take on Halloween! Haven't seen your other two, yet. Excellent work.
