Thursday Movie Picks #49: Animated Movies

It's not really a genre I watch regularly, but here are my three picks. Make sure to check out - http://wanderingthroughtheshelves.blogspot.co.uk/

Hayao Miyazaki's mind is simply one the most astonishingly imaginative that has ever graced the storytelling world. His stories have transcended language barriers to portray emotionally resonant themes such as environmental pressures and this has never been so gloriously showcased than in Princess Mononoke. Blessed with the most beautiful of images, landscapes and beasts of burden, Princess Mononoke is an imaginative, influential and important film that stands high and mighty amongst the giants of amine genre.

Mary and Max is beautifully animated, clay motion film. It is also equally beautifully and movingly written. The ending is brutal but throughout the film there are moments of humour so its completely a depressing experience.

It's been a while since I've seen this, but I remember enjoying this rather fun homage to horror films. It's from the same people who gave us Coraline, which is the film's USP.

  1. Great picks! That's another rec for Mary and Max, I'll definitely have to check that out. Princess Mononoke is one I definitely want to watch after seeing the wonderful Spirited Away.

  3. ParaNorman!! Love it. I remember being especially impressed that they had a gay or lesbian character. First time in a mainstream animated movie that I could think of.

    1. I actually completely forgot about that until I read it again recently. That was a nice touch, good to have far more representation of different types of people in mainstream movies.

  4. I haven't seen Princess Mononoke, but will be watching it later this year as a blind spot entry. ParaNorman was awesome, though I felt that it was overshadowed by Frankenweenie. Mary and Max was a very depressing movie.

  5. I'm not a huge fan of anime in general, but I did like Princess Mononoke. Mary & Max is just SO GOOD isn't it?! ParaNorman is so cute and funny. I like the message of it, too.

  7. I liked MARY & MAX, liked PARANORMAN more, and loved MONONOKE. Is it a coincidence that you don't have any CGI animations?

    1. I tried to avoid picking pixar films because I imagined they'd be picked a lot. I am looking forward to their newest film, it's getting rave reviews.

  8. Nice to see some love for Mary and Max, which not too many people I feel have seen. As for Princess Mononoke, that's one I've seen twice now, but which simply didn't do anything for me (unfortunately as it looks amazing)
